Šī izstādes pamatā ir liels fotomākslinieka Georga Manzūrova radošais darbs. Jau daudzu gadu garumā Georgs Manzūrovs regulāri seko visām cirka novitātēm, viņš iemūžina katras cirka programmas svarīgākos brīžus. Mākslinieks ir izkopis savu cirka redzējumu, viņš virtuozi spēj notvert vispareizāko sekundes simtdaļu, lai fiksētu dinamiska cirka numura pašu labāko izpausmi. Izstādē ir izvietotas 120 G.Manzūrova krāsainās fotogrāfijas, kurās skatāmi gan Latvijas cirka mākslinieki, gan Rīgas Cirka pasaulslavenie viesmākslinieki, gan pateicīgo skatītāju smaidošās sejas.

Lai izstādē ietvertu pēc iespējas plašāku atskatu Rīgas Cirka vēsturē, Georgs Manzūrovs atlasīja apmēram 60 dažādu autoru fotogrāfijas, kas laika gaitā sakrājušās cirka arhīvā. Šajās melnbaltajās fotogrāfijās pievēršamies tieši latviešu cirka vēsturei 20.gadsimta garumā. Starp izmantotajām fotogrāfijām ir arī G.Janaiša, A.Eglīša, A.Šutenkova, V.Piskareva darbi.

Gunārs KATKEVIČS
Like a star in the sky...
Why it has burnt out so soon, so inconceivable to our minds and unacceptable to our hearts...
Returned back from curing but reached the homeland Latvia already asleep forever...

One of the greatest Latvia's circus personalities – artist, stage director, art director of Riga Circus and director for almost twenty years, officer of the 4th rank Cross of Gratitude - Gunars KATKEVICS (13.07.1946. - 02.02.2007.) has passed away.

For the first time this Latgalian guy from Cibla has stepped over the threshold of Riga Circus in 1964 when he was passing it by and searching for job. Already in the first evening he went into circus arena as arena workman or workman in uniform. He came in and stayed here for life. In birthday parties Gunars liked to laugh about himself with a bit of irony: “When I will be remembered, it will be possible to describe me in very short words – from workman in uniform to director...”
After the first practical steps in arena, Gunars went for studies in Moscow school of circus and scene and graduated it as universal balancer and went into his first tour around circus in Soviet Union. In the year 1970 the artist become well-known in the world with his new trick in the air “Fantasy in the air”. Although the equipment used in this trick was given to new air-gymnasts when Gunars Katkevics and Tamara Musina quit these activities, nobody during the circus history could repeat this technically complicated combination of tricks supplemented with well-considered plot and lyrical acting. At that time their performance was appraised by titling them as National artists of Soviet Union Republic of Latvia. This performance is known as one of benchmarks in world's circus art.

Since 1987 Gunars Katkevics worked in Riga Circus. He undertook management of Riga Circus during the time when Latvia gained its independence and Riga Circus became an independent company in opposition to previous times when it was a part of centralized soviet circus system. Now Riga Circus is owned by state of Latvia.
All these years G. Katkevics enthusiastically protected the rights of Riga Circus. Thanks to his perseverance Riga Circus still exists and operates despite various court proceedings against claimants of its land and building and we have used to the fact that every season professional and various circus performances are provided to thousands of parents and their children.

Circus is like one world in another.
It is round.
It has its own cupola and sky.
It has its own stars, which shines. And, like the stars, they will still shine a long time after they themselves have fade away...
Gunar, now you are the star which shines over us. Thank You!

Your RIGA CIRCUS

This can be said about the new show “Circus on the water” where the achievements of 21st century in laser-technique are used.
The author and director of the exciting circus show is Jana Sevchenko. For this show a special music by Jurij Lee, Dmitry Savari, Sergey Krilov and Alona Marchenko was composed. The brilliant costumes which change circus acrobats, air-gymnasts, swimmers into fantastical creatures are made thanks to creative imagination of Natalia Chistova. 20.10.2005. E.Smiļģa theatrical museum ( E.Smiļģa str. 37/39) a circus photo exhibition of a photographer Georg MANZUROV is opened. The exhibition offers photos from various Riga circus shows from the last ten years: portraits of artists, mainly clowns, episodes from circus shows and circus animals.
Georg Manzurov has born in 1939 in Riga. He has acquired profession of polygraphist-technologist but daily he works as a photo reporter. Since 1965 he has worked for various newspapers and magazines. Currently - in “Sakaru Pasaule”, “Zilite”, “Misterija”.
G. Manzurov is a photographer in his soul - a photographer from early childhood. Since the time when he, being twelve years old boy, copied and made the first pictures of handsome actors from a film. Since 1962 he has traveled criss-cross the former Soviet Union. He has taken photos of animals and birds in uninhabited places far away from here - waiting long hours to catch the right moment, the right frame. Enjoyment to take pictures of animals was kept and developed further on - in nature, zoo, various collections and circus.
The circus is a special passion for G. Manzurov. Although he has no agreement with Riga circus now it’s already the second decade when the circus is taken in close-up.
Many try to take a photo of circus but catching the moment, which reflects its essence between the party-coloured dynamics and variety, can be done only by some. From October 20 Georg Manzurov will show you the collection of the caught snatches for two months.

03.10.2005.The touring summer circus „ALLE” has closed the season. From April 24 until October 2, the circus has been travelling around Latvia and giving performances in 65 towns and populated places.  21.09.2005. Sad moment - Latvian circus artist Alina VILLA (20.02.1927-16.09.2005) has passed away. During all her artistic career at the circus from 1954 until 1984 she has been performing as an aerial gymnast; since 1964 she appeared in solo - first year on trapeze, later - on a particular ring, which gave a possibility to show both - gymnastics and equilibrist stunts. Today - funeral procession from Crematory’s Funeral Hall.
